First Day Absence Procedure
I am writing to make you aware of the school procedure for children who have unexplained absences from school.
You are probably aware of cases, reported in the media, where children have been off school without explanation, only for it to transpire later that there have been tragic circumstances around these absences, e.g. illness of a parent and a child unable to seek help. We will do everything we can to prevent such situations occurring and are therefore writing to you to make you aware of our procedures. If your child is not going to be in school, please call the office on 01384 818210. There is an absence line available 24 hours a day. Please try to do this before 9.15am on the first day of the absence. If we have not heard from you by 9.30am then we will start to call all the contact numbers that you have provided in order to gain an explanation for the absence. If we have several children unaccounted for, we will start with older pupils who may have walked to school by themselves.
We will follow the process below: -
1. Phone main parental contact/s, leaving messages if we can.
2. Phone secondary contacts, again leaving messages where possible.
3. Consider whether a home visit is necessary
4. Consider whether a request to the police for a ‘Safe & Well’ check is necessary
To prevent unnecessary escalation as described above, it is vital that you tell us if your child is not going to be in school. It is also important that you let the school office know if any contact details change.
If, having read this letter, you would like to give us an additional contact number to ring in the event of an unexplained absence or change any existing contact names and numbers, please contact the office.
