Our topic for the spring term is a geography topic, all about where we live. Our BIG question is: How can I find where I live on a map? We will be developing our geography skills by looking at our school grounds and comparing them to aerial photos before having a go at creating a map of our playground. We will then be learning about the four countries and capitals of the UK. Our knowledge organiser has more information about the key facts and vocabulary we will be learning about.

During our first half-term in Year 1 we take time to settle in and recap our phonics learning from EYFS, including phase 2 and 3 sounds, phase 4 consonant groups and reading longer words by chunking up. We will also recap all the tricky words that were taught in EYFS. Towards the end of the half-term, we will be starting our new learning with some phase 5 graphemes. Phase 5 is when we learn alternate graphemes (ways of writing) for phonemes (sounds) that we already know from phase 2 and 3.
