Welcome to Year 1!

This year, our exciting topics are Toys, Where We Live, and Travel and Transport. We’ll be learning in lots of fun and creative ways, through activities linked to these themes. Throughout the year, we’ll build on what we already know while discovering new and fascinating facts and ideas. It’s going to be a fantastic year of learning and exploration!

Reading

In Year 1, your child will read with an adult in our guided reading sessions. Every Thursday your child's reading book will be changed. They will receive a new book that they have practised in school and can read at home to improve their fluency and understanding. The expectation is that children should read at least three times a week at home, with each reading session recorded in their reading diaries. Please ensure the book is returned each Thursday so it can be exchanged for a new one. Reading diaries will be checked each Friday.

Your child works extremely hard every day in phonics lessons, so please take time to listen to them and celebrate their progress with lots of praise. If they encounter a word they can't read, encourage them to decode (sound it out) and blend it. After they have finished, take some time to discuss the book together.

Every Monday your child will visit the school library. They will be able to return their book and choose an exciting  new one!

Autumn 1 Reading Spine books: 'The Pirate Mums' by Jodie Lancet-Grant, 'This is How We Do It' by Matt Lamothe and 'Smile Out Loud' by Joseph Coelho.

Autumn 2 Reading Spine books: 'The Velveteen Rabbit' by Margery Williams, 'What are Toys Made of?' by Joanna Brundle and 'Zim Zam Zoom! by James Carter.

PE

PE will take place on Wednesday afternoons. On this day, please ensure your child comes to school wearing their PE kit and trainers. Our PE kit consists of black shorts (no logo), a plain black t-shirt/school PE top, plain black jogging bottoms, and a plain black crew-neck sweatshirt or school jumper. PE kits will be worn for the entire day.

For safety reasons, no jewellery should be worn, and long hair must be tied back. Please ensure that all uniform items are clearly labelled.

Forest Time

Forest School takes place on Thursday afternoons. To keep your child comfortable and safe, please make sure they come dressed in plain black jogging bottoms, a plain black crew-neck sweatshirt or school jumper and suitable footwear.

Don’t forget to clean those Wellington boots before sending them in – this helps us keep the classrooms mud-free!
