French at Hurst Green is designed to develop pupils’ curiosity, confidence and enjoyment in learning a modern foreign language whilst fostering an appreciation of different cultures and ways of life. Through the Language Angels scheme, pupils develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills whilst building confidence in communicating in French.
French is taught from Year 3 to Year 6 in line with National Curriculum requirements. The curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure pupils progressively develop vocabulary, pronunciation and grammatical understanding over time. Pupils revisit and build upon previously taught language, helping them to communicate with increasing accuracy and independence.
Through a range of engaging topics, pupils learn to understand and respond to spoken and written French, ask and answer questions, express opinions and communicate simple ideas. Lessons encourage pupils to listen carefully, speak confidently and develop resilience as language learners whilst gaining an understanding of French language and culture.
French learning is enriched through songs, games, stories, cultural experiences and interactive activities which bring language learning to life. Through the curriculum, pupils are encouraged to become enthusiastic and confident language learners who are well prepared for further language study in Key Stage 3 and beyond.
