  • Design & Technology

Design and Technology at Hurst Green is designed to develop pupils' creativity, problem-solving skills and practical understanding through purposeful designing, making and evaluating experiences. Through the study of mechanisms, structures, textiles, electrical systems, food preparation and nutrition, pupils develop technical knowledge alongside the confidence to create products that solve real and relevant problems.

Children begin developing design and technology skills in the Early Years through exploration, construction, problem-solving and creative experiences. As they move through Key Stages 1 and 2, pupils progressively develop their ability to investigate products, generate and communicate ideas, select appropriate materials and tools, and evaluate the effectiveness of their designs.

Practical learning is at the heart of the curriculum. Pupils learn to take risks, solve problems, adapt their work and reflect on successes and areas for improvement. Through designing, making and evaluating products, they develop resilience, independence and increasingly sophisticated technical vocabulary and skills.

Design and Technology also supports pupils' understanding of healthy lifestyles, sustainability and the role of innovation within modern society. Through practical projects, STEM opportunities and cross-curricular learning, pupils are encouraged to become confident, creative and reflective designers who can apply their learning in the wider world.
