French at Hurst Green is designed to develop pupils’ curiosity, confidence and enjoyment in learning a modern foreign language while fostering an appreciation of different cultures and ways of life. Using the Language Angels scheme as a foundation, the curriculum is carefully sequenced from Year 3 to Year 6 to ensure pupils progressively develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills over time.
The curriculum aims to build pupils’ confidence in communicating in French while developing an understanding of pronunciation, vocabulary and basic grammar. Through regular exposure to spoken and written French, pupils begin to understand how language works and develop the confidence to communicate simple ideas and opinions.
The French curriculum is structured progressively so that pupils revisit and build upon previously taught vocabulary and language structures over time. Units are carefully sequenced to support long-term retention and increasingly confident use of language. Pupils begin by learning and responding to simple words and phrases before progressing towards forming sentences, asking questions and expressing ideas independently.
Language Angels supports progression in both vocabulary acquisition and grammatical understanding. Pupils gradually develop knowledge of key grammatical concepts such as gender, adjectives, sentence structure and verb use in an age-appropriate way. Pronunciation and speaking confidence are prioritised throughout the curriculum to help pupils develop accurate speaking and listening skills alongside increasing fluency.
Pupils develop their language skills through speaking, listening, reading and writing activities which are taught in an integrated way to support communication and understanding. Lessons encourage pupils to listen carefully, repeat accurately, respond confidently and apply language in different contexts.
Through the curriculum, pupils explore themes such as family, food, school, animals, hobbies and the wider world, helping them to develop practical vocabulary and cultural understanding. Pupils are encouraged to recognise similarities and differences between languages while developing confidence, resilience and enjoyment when communicating in French.
French learning is enriched through songs, games, stories, cultural experiences and interactive activities which help bring language learning to life. Through the curriculum, pupils are encouraged to become enthusiastic and confident language learners who are prepared for further language study in Key Stage 3 and beyond.
