Art and Design at Hurst Green is designed to inspire creativity, curiosity and self-expression while developing progressively more sophisticated artistic skills and techniques from Year 1 to Year 6. Using the Kapow scheme as a foundation, the curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure pupils build knowledge, confidence and practical skills across a range of artistic disciplines over time.
Pupils explore drawing, painting, sculpture, printing, textiles and mixed media through engaging, practical experiences that encourage experimentation, reflection and creativity. Sketchbooks play an important role throughout the curriculum, allowing pupils to develop ideas, practise techniques, record observations and reflect on their artistic journey over time.

Sketchbooks play an important role throughout the curriculum, enabling pupils to develop ideas, practise techniques, record observations and reflect on their artistic journey over time. Units are adapted where appropriate to strengthen meaningful cross-curricular links and enrich pupils’ understanding.
Pupils are encouraged to experiment with materials, explore different artistic styles and develop their own creative responses. The curriculum places a strong emphasis on discussion, reflection and evaluation, helping pupils to articulate their ideas and respond thoughtfully to the work of others using appropriate artistic vocabulary.
Pupils study a diverse range of artists, designers and craftspeople from different cultures, backgrounds and periods in history, including individuals of different ages, ethnicities, genders, sexualities and disabilities. This helps pupils develop a broader understanding of creativity, representation and artistic expression within the wider world.
Enrichment opportunities such as focus days and whole-school creative projects further enhance the curriculum and provide opportunities for pupils to showcase their creativity and artistic skills.
