Art and Design at Hurst Green is designed to inspire creativity, curiosity and self-expression whilst developing pupils' artistic knowledge, skills and confidence. Through a broad range of artistic experiences, pupils learn to communicate ideas, explore materials and techniques, and develop an appreciation of art, craft and design from different cultures and periods of history.

Children begin developing artistic skills in the Early Years through exploration, mark-making, drawing, painting, construction and creative expression. As they move through Key Stages 1 and 2, pupils build increasingly sophisticated knowledge and skills across a range of disciplines, including drawing, painting, sculpture, printing, textiles and mixed media.

Practical exploration lies at the heart of the curriculum. Pupils are encouraged to experiment with materials, develop technical skills, record observations and refine ideas through the use of sketchbooks. They learn to discuss, evaluate and reflect upon their own work and the work of others using increasingly precise artistic vocabulary.

Pupils study a diverse range of artists, designers and craftspeople from different cultures, backgrounds and historical periods. Through enrichment opportunities, creative projects and wider artistic experiences, pupils develop confidence, creativity and an understanding of the important role art plays in expressing ideas, identity and culture.
