  • Physical Education

Physical Education at Hurst Green is designed to inspire pupils to develop a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity while promoting confidence, resilience, teamwork and healthy lifestyles. Using the PE Hub scheme as a foundation, the curriculum is carefully sequenced from EYFS to Year 6 to ensure that pupils progressively develop physical skills, tactical understanding and confidence across a wide range of sports and activities.

The curriculum aims to support all pupils in becoming physically active, developing positive attitudes towards exercise and understanding the importance of cooperation, perseverance and good sportsmanship. Inclusion is central to PE at Hurst Green, ensuring that all pupils are encouraged and supported to participate, succeed and develop confidence in physical activity.

    Structure & Sequencing

The PE curriculum is structured progressively so that pupils build upon previously taught physical skills and knowledge over time. Pupils develop fundamental movement skills in the early years before progressing towards more complex sport-specific skills, tactics and game play as they move through the school.

Through the PE Hub curriculum, pupils experience a broad range of activities including invasion games, net and wall games, striking and fielding, gymnastics, dance, athletics and outdoor activities. Lessons are carefully sequenced to develop agility, balance, coordination, control and teamwork, while also encouraging pupils to evaluate and improve their own performance.

In EYFS, pupils take part in Balanceability sessions which help develop early coordination, balance and confidence. Swimming forms an important part of the Key Stage 2 curriculum, enabling pupils to develop water confidence and essential water safety skills.

    Physical Development & Competition

Pupils are encouraged to develop resilience, determination and positive sporting behaviours through both competitive and non-competitive activities. The curriculum places a strong emphasis on teamwork, communication and respect for others, helping pupils understand the importance of fair play and good sportsmanship.

As pupils progress through the school, they develop increasing confidence when applying skills in competitive situations, working collaboratively and responding positively to challenge. Opportunities for reflection and evaluation help pupils to recognise their own progress and identify ways to improve both individually and as part of a team.

    Enrichment

A wide range of enrichment opportunities further enhance PE at Hurst Green. Pupils are able to participate in after-school sports clubs, competitions and school teams, helping to promote enjoyment, participation and aspiration within sport. Sports coaches also provide lunchtime activities and additional sporting opportunities for pupils across the school.

Through the curriculum and wider sporting experiences, pupils are encouraged to become active, confident and respectful individuals who understand the value of teamwork, resilience and healthy living.
