Music at Hurst Green is designed to inspire creativity, self-expression and a lifelong appreciation of music. Through the Charanga scheme of work, pupils develop their musical knowledge, skills and understanding whilst experiencing the enjoyment and personal fulfilment that music can bring.

The curriculum is carefully sequenced from Reception to Year 6, enabling pupils to progressively develop their skills in listening, singing, performing, composing and appraising music. Pupils build understanding of key musical concepts such as pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics and structure whilst developing confidence and creativity as musicians.

Through the study of a wide range of musical styles, genres, traditions and composers, pupils develop an appreciation of music from different cultures, periods and communities. Music of the Week and the Charanga Listening Calendar further enrich the curriculum, exposing pupils to an even broader range of musical experiences and helping them to develop their listening and appraisal skills.

Music plays an important role in the wider life of the school. Pupils have opportunities to participate in choir, whole-class violin tuition, Dudley Performing Arts events, Young Voices and local performances. Through the curriculum and wider enrichment opportunities, pupils are encouraged to become confident, creative and reflective musicians who enjoy making, performing and appreciating music.
