At Hurst Green Primary School, safeguarding is central to everything we do. We are part of Operation Encompass, a national safeguarding initiative which supports children who may have been affected by domestic abuse.

What is Operation Encompass?

Operation Encompass is a partnership between schools, police, and local authorities. It ensures that when police attend a domestic abuse incident where a child is present or affected, the school is notified before the start of the next school day. 

This information is shared securely with a trained member of staff, known as the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), so that appropriate support can be put in place.

Why this matters

Children who are exposed to domestic abuse can experience significant emotional, behavioural, and psychological impact. Early information sharing allows schools to respond quickly and sensitively.

Operation Encompass is now embedded in safeguarding practice nationally and forms part of the wider statutory approach to protecting children. 

What happens in school?

When we receive an Operation Encompass notification:

• Information is treated in strict confidence.
• Only key safeguarding staff are informed.
• Support is tailored to the needs of the child.

This may include:

• A quiet check-in with a trusted adult.
• Additional pastoral support.
• Flexibility and understanding during the school day.

Our role is not to investigate, but to provide care, stability, and support at a time when a child may need it most.

• Providing a safe and nurturing environment
• Responding quickly to safeguarding information
• Supporting children and families with sensitivity and care
• Working with external agencies where appropriate

If appropriate, we may contact families to offer support and ensure that the right help is in place.
